The Ransomware Challenge

Ransomware has taken over the airwaves in recent years and months. cities, businesses and individuals are all falling victim. Ransomware is also called a cryptolocker.

One of the effective ways hackers leverage is phishing campaigns that trick users into clicking an innocent looking link which actually directs them to the malware creators servers. The malware downloads the malware, encrypts their data and demands a ransom.

There are several effective methods to combat cryptolockers focusing on people, process and technology.

One effective method is to provide your users with training and awareness to avoid clicking on deceptive links. DNS based protection such as Cisco Umbrella is also effective in that it blocks the DNS based resolution which would otherwise download the malware.

Anti-malware is also a must in protecting your IT assets as is the good old firewall. firewalls have become more intelligent and provide enhanced features such as intrusion

Prevention System/Intrusion Detection System (IDS/IPS). Alternately, you can deploy a dedicated IPS/IDS system.

Managing the vulnerabilities in all your systems is always time well spent. More importantly than just patching systems, is applying patches and security updates in a timely and disciplined manner.
